The MeeGo 1.1 operating system was announced as available only a few weeks ago. Now the MeeGo 1.1 Software Development Kit (SDK) has been released, though only in a beta version for now. The MeeGo 1.1 offers the users of Nokia N900, which received a software update a few days ago, the possibility to try out the best of two worlds, Maemo and MeeGo.
The new MeeGo v1.1 SDK provides application developers the possibility to develop, install, and debug applications, as well as run applications on N900, Netbook, and Aava devices. An emulator (QEMU) is also provided in case you don’t have a MeeGo hardware. The release includes Qt Quick – Javascript-inspired framework that enables rapid development of mobile applications. The MeeGo 1.1 SDK is currently available only for Ubuntu Lucid (32bit) and Fedora 13 (32bit) operating systems. The SDK is still in beta and the final version will include MS Windows support.
“MeeGo v1.1 SDK Beta release provides a Qt Creator-based development environment for developing, debugging, and running mobile applications on N900, Aava and Netbook devices. An emulator (QEMU) is also provided for developing without target hardware. Experimental versions of tools for Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems may already be available, but they are not yet fully tested,” the release note stated.
The SDK, based on the Qt SDK and API, includes the most recent releases of Qt Quick and Qt Mobility. This powerful platform along with the extensive documentation available, helps you create Qt applications that target the different MeeGo UXs. The MeeGo SDK also allows you to control the full application development cycle. For development works, we encourage you to use MeeGo API, which currently consists of Qt 4.7 and Qt Mobility 1.0. MeeGo API comes with a forward compatibility promise and will be extended in future releases.

MeeGo Operating System was born from the merger of Nokia’s Maemo platform and Intel’s Moblin operating system. The new mobile operating system was announced in May, but was made available for handsets only a few weeks ago. However, the MeeGo handset image is already available for download for some time now. The image can be easily installed on the Nokia N900 which, via a recent software update, was made capable of dual booting in both Maemo and MeeGo.
