Google’s AI Overviews is expanding following its launch in May as it will now be rolled out in more than 100 countries and territories around the world.
The latest push will see the feature have more than one billion global users every month, with Google saying “the feedback we’ve received for AI Overviews has been highly positive.”
The new AI integration is visible when users type in a search into the browser, with an AI summary now visible before the normal searches appear. This aims to include the key information in one glance, with top articles and news sources linked below it.
According to the search engine, “people prefer using Search with AI Overviews, and they find their search results more helpful.”
As part of the update, the language support has been extended too. “If you’re in any country with AI Overviews, you can now get them in any of the currently supported languages, including English, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
“So, for example, if you’re in the United States and you speak Spanish, you can now see AI Overviews in your preferred language.”
Google AI Overviews expands after a rocky start
It was on May 14 when the company formally made the announcement that AI-powered changes were to be taking place, with the United States being the first to see the new integration.
It wasn’t a smooth entry though, as the feature was spewing out incorrect information. In one search, where someone input ‘cheese not sticking to pizza’ into Google, the AI Overview tool flashed up saying: “Cheese can slide off pizza for several reasons, including too much sauce, too much cheese, or thickened sauce. Here are some things you can try…”
After suggesting mixing in the sauce, the AI then said: “You can also add about ⅛ cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give it more tackiness.”
The incorrect suggestions appeared when the tool was still in its infancy, with the team likely having honed it since.
