It may well mark another milestone in cloud computing that we have been hearing so much buzz lately about cloud monitoring. No longer is it simply questions of “should we move to the cloud,” but questions of “okay, we’re committed to the cloud. How can we tell what works?”
Along those lines, Zenoss announces today that it will be the first company to offer an independent monitoring and service assurance solution built specifically for VMWare’s vCloud.
For those organizations deploying VMware Cloud Director, Zenoss provides real-time visualization of the entire cloud infrastructure – both physical and virtual resources.
As Chet Luther, Cloud Architect at Zenoss told ReadWriteWeb that the company put a “stake in the ground” to build monitoring tools, and as such provides an end-to-end solution for companies. Furthermore he argues that you can’t simply “take legacy tools to the cloud” hoping they can track everything. Rather, purpose-built tools are needed in order to really map and monitor the whole infrastructure. In the case of Zenoss and VMWare Cloud Director, that mapping includes virtual data centers, physical servers, as well as storage and network components.
Zenoss can provide services for both private and public clouds built with VMware Cloud Director. Using the vCloud API, Zenoss gathers real-time information, and in term offers reporting, alerting, and action scripting.
As more companies move to the cloud, it’s no surprise that there’s more demand for monitoring these resources. Zenoss already boasts a community of over 85,000 users already for its open source and its commercial solution and hopes that being the first independent company to monitor VMware’s Cloud Director will boost that number substantially.
