Over half of LinkedIn long form posts are AI-generated, study finds

AI is sweeping across industries worldwide and LinkedIn is no different as over half of long posts on the platform are likely to be AI-generated according to a new study.

The Microsoft-owned social media site is a place for networking between businesses, employees, and employers but it’s now believed to have seen an explosive growth of the new technology.

The research was completed by Originality.ai, an AI content detector, with 8,795 LinkedIn long-form posts being analyzed to determine who they were written by – technology or a human.

The study spanned content published over 82 months from January 2018 to October 2024, with posts involved being at least 100 words. The analysis included different LinkedIn users.

AI in LinkedIn found to be more prevalent since the launch of ChatGPT 

It was found that there has been an 189% increase in AI posts on the platform since ChatGPT launched, with 54% of all long-form posts likely being AI-generated.

This surge is suggested to have been influenced by OpenAI’s chatbot, as the results before the release of this in 2022 were at a low.

“After the release of ChatGPT, the amount of AI content on LinkedIn posts per month significantly spiked, showing an 189% increase from January to February 2023,” Jonathan Gillham writes in the findings.

“This spike is likely due to ChatGPT’s ease of use, accessibility, and ability to generate high-quality human-like content.”

After the spike in February of 2023, the study suggests there has now been a stabilization that could indicate a new normal for the content on LinkedIn, where roughly half the content could be AI-generated.

Since the release of ChatGPT, which likely caused a surge in AI content, the “length of LinkedIn posts has significantly increased.” On average, the posts seen now have a higher word count and this can be seen as having risen over time.

“The trend here likely confirms the use of AI tools not only increased the percentage of AI-generated posts per month but also influenced the word count of these posts.

As AI continues to change industries worldwide, its use across LinkedIn suggests an interesting movement is occurring on social media.
