New York mobile sports betting handle bounces back in March after low February

The New York State Gaming Commission has released its figures from the 2024-25 fiscal year, with January being the highest month despite the frenzy of March Madness.

The commission is the official governing body that oversees and regulates all aspects of legal gaming activity in the State. When looking at mobile sports wagering, March 2025 saw a handle of $2.44bn and $161.8m which was up from a dip that was seen in February when it was $1.9bn.

This slight spike has come at a time when March Madness has been ongoing, with some operators running different deals and offers for those betting on college basketball.

Despite this, the March figure wasn’t the highest as January took this title with a massive $2.48bn and $247m in GGR. December wasn’t far behind at $2.28bn, with September, October and November all also being over the $2 billion mark.

The lowest figure was seen at the start of summer, in July, with the amount totalling $1.26bn. August was the next lowest month at $1.43bn.

New York operators: What did March Madness look like?

For March, DraftKings took the largest handle at $912.1 million which represents a 37.38% market share.

FanDuel followed closely with a 35.34% market share, then Fanatics was in third with 8.5%.

Within the report, the gaming commission states that $6 million of ‘Net Revenue to Education’ shall be distributed for problem gambling education and treatment purposes.

A further $5 million of ‘Net Revenue to Education’ shall be distributed for a youth sports activities and education grant program for the purpose of providing annual awards to sports programs for underserved youth.

The state uses some of the money for educational purposes, with even money from the New York Lottery going towards public schools. In 2024, a TV and radio advertising campaign was launched to remind New Yorkers that money goes towards public education.

More than $86 billion has been generated for public schools by the lottery alone since 1967, the commission states.
