EMC introduced today its new EMC Greenplum Data Computing Appliance, a data warehouse appliance aimed to be able to process massive amounts of data quickly.
As the system’s long name indicates, it’s a technology enabled by EMC’s acquisition of Greenplum earlier this year. In fact, today’s press release touts the appliance’s release just 75 days following the acquisition, demonstrating the importance of having systems in place to be able to efficiently handle big data.
The Greenplum Data Computing Appliance takes advantage of the parallel processing technology developed by Greenplum, and EMC says that the architecture will deliver data loading performance of 10 terabytes an hour, touting its speed over competitors’ products. It is also more scalable and flexible, says EMC.
“The amount of data that businesses have at their disposal is greater than ever before and new tools are required to gain business insight from it,” said Bill Teuber, EMC Vice Chairman. “The EMC Greenplum technology provides the deep analytic processing that enables customers to leverage all of their data, taken from many sources, to make smarter decisions, faster.”
The product is aimed at companies who need to be able to derive business intelligence from massive amounts of data. As it becomes imperative for companies to find ways not just to store but to analyze data at the terabyte (and larger) scale, the ability to offer both warehousing and analytic tools for big data.
