Avowed is already a big game and it isn’t even out for the majority of players yet, but one of the best things Obsidian has done with the engine seems so simple you wonder why everybody doesn’t include the feature.
Last week we took a look at how simple it was to switch between first and third-person perspectives in the game – you can either do it in the menu or on the fly as you play which is super cool – you can read all about that here. But ultimately, which is the better mode to play the game in? Does it matter and is it all down to personal preference?
Let’s dig a little deeper and see if we can come up with a definitive answer
Avowed – first or third person?
Let’s examine the pros and cons of the two different settings.
First-person
In recent years first person has probably become the defacto darling for RPGs and the way most people will play most of the time. The biggest plus point for first person is immersion. Seeing your whole character like you are perched behind them breaks that wall of actually being there.
Bringing the action directly in front of your face also increases the size of things, including enemies as the camera isn’t withdrawn further back, and potentially your little third-person character could even block your view.
Having said that if you play a lot of something like Fortnite you will be perfectly comfortable with the third-person mechanic.
Third-person
There was a time when third person was the only real way to play games, and depending on how long in the tooth you are you may still find this the most pleasing way to play.
The increased field of view can often bring tactical advantages and you are far less likely to be surprised by anything sneaking up on you as the camera being pulled back allows you to see, to a point, to your sides and behind. Views you simply will not get without spinning around in first-person mode.
So which is best?
If you were one of the main devs of Avowed, how would you play? Well again it is entirely down to personal preference but the game kind of feels like it should be played in first-person, if only for the increased immersion.
It’s probably best not to sweat it though and if you like third-person, you won’t be missing out on anything, that’s for sure.
