New guidelines for gambling VIP programs have been released by the Responsible Online Gaming Association (ROGA). While an independent body, it represents 90% of legal sports betting in the US.
VIP programs are a huge business within the sportsbook world. They’re designed to entice high rollers to keep playing with boosted bets and free gifts, keeping revenue up from some of the biggest spenders on the platforms.
DraftKings, Fanatics, Fanduel, and others all run their own VIP programs, with statuses like Onyx applied to DraftKings users who spend well over $350,000 to $1.4 million.
VIPs to get additional protections with new guidelines
The new guidelines aren’t overtly detailed, spanning four sections and about three bullet points each. It covers things like providing ongoing training and continuously reminding players to gamble responsibly.
Key elements of the guidelines surround providing the VIP player base with proper care. ROGA instructs businesses not to entice back users who have “self-excluded” or been banned, or are in a “cool-off period”. It also tells sportsbooks to provide any data that they might have on them from a gambling perspective (total wagered, etc.).
ROGA is also recommending that companies keep up with development and updates to provide a responsible gaming environment.

Speaking on the guidelines, ROGA Executive Director, Dr. Jennifer Shatley, said:
“Like in many sectors of entertainment, leisure, and hospitality, sportsbooks’ VIP programs aim to reward and retain loyal players, and it is essential that these programs are operated with a strong commitment to responsible gaming.
“These programs should support a shared understanding between hosts and players on the value of responsible gaming that fosters long-term loyalty and player well-being.
“There is a robust conversation ongoing regarding VIP programs, which is why we have prioritized this issue, as it is essential to provide research-driven guidance to adequately support these programs to help keep VIP players’ experience fun and recreational.”
