Spotify increases music video support to 85 additional markets

TLDR

  • Spotify expanded its music video beta to 85 more markets, now covering a total of 97 places.
  • Music videos are available only to Premium subscribers with a limited catalog of songs.
  • Users who watch music videos are more likely to stream, save, or share the song afterward.

After Spotify introduced music videos in beta testing earlier this year, they’ve today announced (October 15) an expansion of this into 85 new markets.

The testing was originally rolled out in 12 markets, with these users able to watch music videos on the app for some months now.

The first countries to get the feature included the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya. Egypt was added shortly after.

Now, a total of 97 locales will be able to see the beta upgrade, but only paying customers will get the feature. It’s only open to Premium subscribers and will take a few weeks for it to be delivered.

Not every song will be viewable alongside its video either, as the streaming service is only doing so with a limited catalog of music videos to begin with.

The company hasn’t shared which markets this will include, nor whether the United States will be on the list.

Spotify sees success with music video support and makes it easier for users to access

Since its initial testing, Spotify has found that users who discover a song and then watch the music video on the app are 34% more likely on average to stream the song again the following week.

They also found that on average songs discovered with music videos are 24% more likely to be saved or shared in the following week by those who watched.

To amplify this further, the company has added new features “to make the music videos in beta experience even better.”

This includes:

  • “Fans can easily find and discover new music videos to watch (on mobile and desktop) with video indicators on tracks.
  • “Users can also more easily find the music video they’re looking for alongside its related track by typing the track or artist into search.”

The ability to switch between music tracks and videos with a single tap of a button has been made possible too.
