After being released in June 2024, the Sony Xperia 1 VI has just had a major upgrade as the phone now supports Wi-Fi 7 connectivity.
This has been included in the latest software update, with the company sharing the news on Instagram and welcoming people “to the future of Wi-Fi!”
In the post on Sunday (Oct, 13), Sony said: “Xperia 1 VI is now compatible with Wi-Fi 7 with software update! Wi-Fi 7 achieves faster communication and more stable connectivity, offering next-level connections.
“It will deliver smoother streaming, faster gaming, and lag-free video calls.”
It was in January of 2024 when the new Wi-Fi 7 was first released, promising to be the most powerful version yet. The seventh is up to four times faster than current Wi-Fi connections, meaning it’s quicker than ever before.
On the release of the iPhone 16 models, Sony’s competitor Apple remained quiet about its connectivity possibilities but it was the company’s spec sheets that confirmed that Wi-Fi 7 will be supported on the four models which were launched in September.
Some of the earlier companies to adopt this new level of connectivity for some of their more recent releases included Samsung with some of its Galaxy range, along with Vivo, Asus, ZTE, OnePlus, Motorola, Nubia, and Google with its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
What is Wi-Fi 7?
While the technology was launched several months ago, it’ll likely take years for mass adoption to take place. This is largely due to device compatibility as developers will have to ensure their products can support Wi-Fi 7.
The Wi-Fi Alliance said “more than 233 million devices” are expected to enter the market in 2024, growing to 2.1 billion devices by 2028. They predicted smartphones, PCs, tablets, and access points to be the earliest adopters of Wi-Fi 7.
For the companies that start to provide support for the latest upgrade to Wi-Fi, their customers will be able to enjoy more advanced features.
These include 320 MHz channels, Multi-Link Operation, 4K QAM, 512 Compressed block-ack, Multiple RUs to a single STA, Triggered Uplink Access, and Emergency Preparedness Communication Services.
