As early as last year, Canadian Samsung Galaxy smartphone users were making the most of Samsung’s Samsung Pay mobile payment system. One year later, though, and most users have only been able to use Samsung Pay by way of CIBC (no other bank, unfortunately). As you know, mobile payment systems are only as strong as their greatest weakness, and, if Samsung Pay will continue to remain a force with which to be reckoned, it must continue to grow. Its partners are key to its survival.
To this end, Samsung has partnered up with additional banks in Canada to bring Samsung Pay to more Canadian customers. The six new banks now eligible for Samsung Pay users are Mastercard, ATB Financial, Visa Canada, American Express Canada, Interac Debit, and Scotiabank. Samsung intends to add Tangerine and Peoples Card Services as upcoming partners in the future.
Along with the six new added partners, Samsung is also bringing debit card integration to Samsung Pay so that you can now include debit cards and make mobile payments with debit card numbers and accounts as well. Prior to this new change, only CIBC credit cards were eligible.
Just this past month, Samsung has added Android Oreo support for Samsung Pay and introduced more banks and customers to its mobile payment solution: Suncorp Group and Latitude Financial Services (Australia), Kotak Mahindra Bank (India), and American Express (UK). Samsung Pay is now supported by 5,000 Wells Fargo ATMs in the United States. In the Korean giant’s home country, Samsung Pay now boasts 6.44 million customers, making it the most popular mobile transaction platform in South Korea.
