Samsung is seeing to launch its NX line of mirrorless cameras with the release of the Samsung NX Ultra. This new camera has a reported interchangeable lens that uses the new 108MP Isocell sensor that is also found in the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
The NX Ultra is a more touchscreen-driven hybrid. It offers the same kind of direct navigation of the Galaxy phones. I think that this is preferred to the traditional menu systems that are usually on camera systems – they can be pretty confusing. As well as this, Samsung may be keen to future-proof itself against the decline of smartphone sales that the industry has been experiencing over the past years. According to the latest research, buyers are happy to keep their smartphone for 24 months or more. Rather than upgrading every year, why not stick with their phone that still works. Samsung sees the value in leveraging the image sensor technology from their smartphones into hybrid camera systems.
The specifications of the Samsung NX Ultra are said to similar to the specs of the Samsung S20 Ultra. This includes the 8K video at up to 30fps. However, the smartphone’s Space Zoom feature may not be transferred over to the camera. This is due to the fact that it is difficult to integrate with lenses used by the NX mount.
