PS4 emulator keeps getting better and better with large advances in getting much-loved PlayStation exclusive to run

We have been covering a fair bit of the advancement of PS4 emulation over the past few weeks as the new kid on the block, ShadPS4, has started to make remarkable leaps and bounds running some huge games in the PlayStation 4’s 3D library.

We have had basic PS4 emulation for ages now but this has been restricted to 2D games and homebrew – fine for shoot ‘em-up fans but for anybody wanting to boot up Bloodborne, well that has until now, been nothing more than pipedream.

In recent weeks though excitement has been building as first we started to see Bloodborne at least loading, then we started to see progression get further and further and the intro cutscenes of some older PS4 games and remakes started to pretty much work, but now, with this latest update Bloodborne is reported to now run its intro video at 30fps with no glitches. Okay so that’s not exactly the game but these things don’t just start working.

In such a short space of time, the development pace has been electric, and while we are still obviously some considerable way from a fully playable emulated version of From Softwasre’s classic, progress is swift.

The latest version of of ShadPS4, version 0.2.1 is now available to download and also now has a version for the Mac.

As the emulator becomes more popular more and more people are volunteering to bring their expertise to the project, which in turn continues to speed things up further – at this stage, ShadPS4 is the proverbial rolling stone that is not interested in picking up any moss.

The version that is now available for download states on its page, “Fifth release of Shadps4 . A lot of commercial games working and some are even playable.”

While there is no point in downloading the emulator unless you are just genuinely interested in following its progress at this stage, the fact that this is even becoming possible is crazy, when you consider where we were at the start of the year.

With work progressing as quickly as it is, it will be interesting to see how far the development team has got by the end of 2024.
