The UK becomes the latest to see a subscription hike by streaming service Netflix, a month after the US, Canada, Argentina and Portugal saw prices rise.
While the change was already brought in for a number of countries in January, the UK was left out of the list.
Although that left many wondering if they would escape any changes, an update has instead been quietly announced through a change to the company’s ‘Plans and Pricing’ page.
The Standard plan will now be £12.99 which accounts for a £2 increase, with this to be the cost for new subscribers. The Standard with Ads plan will go from £4.99 a month to £5.99, while the Premium will rise from £10.99 per month to £12.99.
Ahead of a price rise, the company emails current members warning them of the upcoming change but this hasn’t yet come through. It’s not known when this will be implemented for those already paying for the service.
Netflix raises prices after biggest subscriber increase yet
On a page titled ‘Why your Netflix price changed’ on the streaming services’ website, it states: “As we continue to add more TV shows and movies and introduce new product features, our plans and prices may change.
“We also may adjust plans and pricing to respond to local market changes, such as changes to local taxes or inflation.”
In the United States, the most expensive plan was raised to $24.99 a month which accounted for a $2 change. The most basic ad-based tier is now $8 a month and the Standard increased from $15.50 to $18.
In January, a shareholder letter revealed the sudden price adjustment in the US, Canada, Portugal and Argentina.
“As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix,” the company stated.
This news came after Netflix ended the year on a high, with an additional 19 million new subscribers in the final quarter. The subscriber figure marked the biggest rise in a single quarter yet for the household name brand.
