Macau casino worker caught stealing $51,000 in chips

A Macau casino worker has been arrested for the theft of casino chips worth over $51,000.

The arrest of the Macau casino employee has been based on multiple alleged thefts whilst the worker was on duty.

According to the Macau Post Daily, the Judiciary Police arrested the individual on the information that the thefts have been a constant at the Zape region casino.

Macau is one of the largest gambling hubs in the world, boasting 47 casinos, and 56 hotel premises, and has taken centre stage in several iconic movies,  such as James Bond’s The Man With the Golden Gun (1974) and Skyfall (2012)

A spokesperson for the Judiciary Police, Ho Chan Nam, gave limited details about the individual. Saying that their surname was “Sam” and had been working at the casino since 2007.

According to the Macau Post, the Judiciary Police received a report on July 22 from the casino where Sam was employed.

The Judiciary Police responded to the casino’s report on Sam and placed the individual under surveillance. Whilst on shift Sam again pocketed another chip and the authorities moved in to take the casino worker into custody for theft.

The report stated that Sam stole on three separate occasions, June 1, July 3, and July 21, whilst on the casino floor. The three chips stolen were worth a face value of HK$100,000, roughly $12,000 per chip.

Sam is alleged to have secreted the chips in her waistband from a roulette table, where they were present, and then hid them in a locker until finishing her shift at the casino.

When in police custody, Sam was reportedly uncooperative with the authorities, failing to give any details or admit their part in the scam.

The Macau Post states that Sam, whilst being investigated by the police, had been using adhesive tape, potentially using the sticky material to snag one of the chips whilst sorting them mid-roulette game.

Sam now faces an aggravated theft charge for the illicit acts and was taken to the Macau Public Prosecutions Office (MP).
