The International Gaming Standards Association (IGSA) is reportedly working on an AI best practices framework to help gambling regulators better grasp the technology and how it’s being used in the industry.
According to iGaming, the organization’s president Mark Pace said AI is currently its top tech priority. Because of this, IGSA is preparing to release a set of “best practices” for using AI in the gambling sector.

Pace told the outlet: “What we’re doing is creating a set of the best practices that we could give to regulatory authorities to help them understand what they should focus on in terms of AI.
“Everything these days seems to be AI-powered, right? Your coffee cup is AI-powered, your tea kettle is AI-powered. It’s just crazy how AI seems to, from a marketing perspective, have become this pervasive technology. Regulators are not immune to that marketing.”
IGSA focuses on creating standards and best practices for suppliers, operators, and regulators in the gaming industry. Its members include major European gaming companies like IGT, Merkur, Novomatic, and Intralot.
The body’s Ethical AI Standards Committee (AIC) is planning to standardize AI use in gaming by providing a framework for responsible implementation and best practices. It states that it also explores AI standards from other industries, adapting them for the global gaming sector to ensure ethical and effective use of the technology.
IGSA calls for AI fail-safe
Pace advised regulators that while it’s important to have a solid understanding of how AI works, they don’t need to dive into it at a developer level.
He continued: “What you need to focus on are things like, ‘What data are you going to let the AI algorithms consume? What is the accuracy level of the data? Does the data already have an inherent bias in it?’ Because, you know, the old adage of garbage in, garbage out, never applied more than to AI algorithms.”
Pace stressed that transparency and accessibility of AI algorithms and applications will be key for regulators. He also pointed out the importance of knowing who is responsible for shutting down AI programs if something goes wrong.
