Google’s Barge Is Just A Learning Center For “New Technology”

Turns out that the barge Google is building in the San Francisco Bay isn’t a data center or a floating party boat. We know this because Google said so, finally admitting that it owns that barge and four others like it.

In a brief statement on Wednesday, Google said:

Google Barge … A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above. Although it’s still early days and things may change, we’re exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology.

That’s the entirety of Google’s statement. An investigative report by CNET broke the news of the mysterious barge and speculated that it could be a floating data center. San Francisco’s CBS affiliate KPIX debunked that myth last week, and said it would instead serve as a party barge and an upscale showroom.
