A Cedar Rapids casino is able to move forward after an Iowa judge has affirmed the validity of its gaming license.
It was back in February when a license was issued to the Linn County Gaming Association for the Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center, but this was then challenged by riverside Casino & Golf Resort.
This 24-hour Vegas-style gaming casino would see the Cedar Rapids casino become a local competitor, with a reported argument in court being that the gaming commission didn’t have the authority to issue the license along with other points.
A legal battle then ensued, with Eighth Judicial District Judge Michael Schilling hearing the oral arguments and filings. Now, however, Schilling has denied the claims from Riverside.
“The court concludes that the decision to grant a gambling license for a Linn County casino on Feb. 6, 2025, cannot be fairly characterized as an erroneous interpretation of law,” Schilling wrote.
The license has been upheld and the plans can continue, with the aim being for the site to open in early 2026.
What is the planned Cedar Rapids casino development?
The Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center, by the Cedar Rapids Development Group, is a $275 million investment and “the largest gaming project in Iowa’s history.”
The project will involve 700 slot machines and 22 table games, with entertainment also thrown into the mix in the venue.
The facility will include a mix of restaurants, along with a 1,500-capacity entertainment venue “that will host top-tier performances and events, drawing visitors from across the state and beyond.”
An Arts & Cultural Center will be included too, alongside a STEM lab which aims to inspire and educate the next generation of innovators.
At the time of the license being granted, some months ago now, the Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell spoke on the opportunity: “Today marks an exciting new chapter for the thousands of people who will benefit from new jobs, economic opportunities and entertainment possibilities created by Cedar Crossing.
“Iowa’s second-largest city has finally been given the opportunity that our residents, business leaders, nonprofits and surrounding communities have sought for years. Cedar Crossing will create new revenue for the state and bring new visitors every year – a solid win for every Iowan.”
