Canadian man sues ex over $5m lottery winnings

A Canadian man has taken legal action against a former partner after a $5 million lottery win tug-of-war.

The man, Lawrence Campbell of Winnipeg, has pointed the finger at Krystal Ann McKay and accused her of “ghosting him” in light of the jackpot win.

Winnipeg man seeks legal battle for lottery winnings

Campbell claims that he purchased the winning 6/49 lottery ticket at a convenience store on January 19, 2025. At the time of the ticket purchase, the claimant states that he and McKay were in a “loyal, committed and promising” relationship, says CBC News (CBC).

The defendant cashed the ticket bought in the Isabel Strett store, and Campbell claims that his wallet had recently and mysteriously gone missing.

Campell attended the offices of Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) and was refused the ability to claim the winnings without his wallet and the required identification.

He reportedly put his trust in McKay to claim the winnings, and she deposited them into her sole bank account, according to the complaining party, Campbell, who said this was “on the understanding that she would hold the winnings, in trust, for his benefit.”

“No one in all of history has simultaneously been a jackpot winner and jackpot loser of the same draw, with the same numbers, on the same ticket,” said Campbell’s lawyer, Chad Panting, in a statement to CBC.

The legal claims by Campbell also state that McKay did not return to the residence they shared and was found with another man, which led to a breakup between the pair. This was despite both parties recording videos for friends and family about the win, and Campbell scanning the winning ticket on his device.

McKay has since taken out a protection order against Campbell in this Canadian lottery love story, and it remains to be seen who will come out the winner in the protracted legal battle.
