What to expect from The Last of Us season 2: Release date and plot

TLDR

  • The Last of Us season 2 premieres in April after HBO's White Lotus concludes.
  • Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey return, with new characters joining the post-apocalyptic drama.
  • Season 2 follows the second game, with plans for a third and possibly fourth season.

Here’s when The Last of Us season 2 will return to our screens, as well as what to expect from the HBO show.

HBO’s The Last of Us is a TV adaptation of Naughty Dog’s game of the same name, following main characters Joel and Ellie in a post-apocalyptic world filled with in-universe versions of zombies, like clickers, runners, bloaters, and more.

A second season for the show has been confirmed after the first came out to a storming success. It will feature returning cast members like Pedro Pascal, who plays the tough, gruff Joel, and Bella Ramsey, who plays his young protege Ellie, as well as a range of newcomers.

What will The Last of Us season 2 be about?

Season 2 is expected to pick back up five years after the first season ended, meaning Ellie will have grown up from a rebellious teen to a young adult.

Season 1 concluded with Joel rescuing Ellie from a hospital seeking to find a cure, keeping the truth of the hospital’s desire to kill her from the teenager. She believes that a cure wasn’t possible, when in fact Joel chose her over a potential cure for the human race.

“Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind,” reads the brief plot synopsis of season 2.

While that keeps most plot details under wraps, the second season is said to follow the plot of the second game, so those who have played it might have an idea of what’s to come. However, the show has already been greenlit for a third season and one of the co-directors, Craig Mazin thinks the plot of the second game could even see it taking the team into a fourth season.

“We don’t think that we’re going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we’re taking our time and [going] down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,” Mazin said in an interview with Deadline. “We feel like it’s almost assuredly going to be the case that — as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television — Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4.”

When is The Last of Us season 2 coming out?

Before we get onto a third or even fourth season, however, we’re going to need a second one to watch. The latest teaser trailer confirmed that the show will air in April, perhaps just after HBO’s other major release for the spring, White Lotus, concludes on April 6.
