Today In the Lulz: Cleary Charged, Brazilian Government Site Taken Down

The Lulz keep on coming.

Ryan Cleary, the 19-year-old alleged criminal hacker arrested in Britain yesterday, has formally been charged with offenses under the United Kingdom’s Criminal Law Act and Computer Misuse Act. The accusations are for a purported Distributed Denial of Service attack against the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) along with several industry groups. In other News Of The Lulz, the group apparently now has a Brazilian arm that has taken down two government websites, according to PCMag.

LulzSec said that Cleary is only partially affiliated with the group, tweeting that one of the group’s chat rooms was hosted on his server.

According to the arrest report, Cleary is also charged with two DDoS attacks in 2010 against the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and British Phonographic Industry, both based in London. According to The Telegraph, Cleary was apprehended in the midst of the SOCA hack. He will be tried in Britain for the attacks but it is possible he will face eventual extradition to the United States for hacks on the CIA and Senate. Clearly is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, June 23.

On the other side of the Atlantic, @LulzSecBrazil has followed through on threats to take down Brazilian government websites if the group reached 1,000 twitter followers. The group took down Brazil’s primary government site as well as the site for President Dilma Rousseff.

LulzSec has teamed up with prominent black hat hacker group Anonymous on Operation Anti-Security that has targeted corporations and governments in the last several weeks. As such, LulzSec says it is swimming in data and will have more leaked material available for public consumption this coming Friday, June 24.
