Starlinks hits 4 million subscribers milestone

The satellite internet network Starlink has hit the four million customers mark, with a million people gained since the end of May alone.

This significant milestone was shared by the company on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday (September 26) with a post saying: “Starlink is connecting more than 4M people with high-speed internet across 100+ countries, territories and many other markers.

“Thank you to all of our customers around the world!”

It was on May 20 when Starlink shared it was now connecting to more than three million people worldwide.

The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX and its satellites were launched in 2019. It was then in January of 2024 when SpaceX launched its first set of direct-to-cell Starlink satellites that intend to provide “mobile connectivity anywhere on Earth.”

Since then, the internet network now boasts that it can be connected in even the most hard to reach areas, including on the water or on the go.

While the company will have secured many individual customers, they have secured numerous deals with major businesses since its conception.

Starlink to be added to major airlines

Its latest win was announced on Thursday (September 26) as Air France launched “free ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi on board all its aircraft” thanks to Starlink.

In a press release, the airline writes that to “launch this new onboard Wi-Fi service, Air France has chosen Starlink, the world leader in connectivity.

“By leveraging the world’s largest constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, Starlink offers high-speed, low-latency Internet access across the entire globe, including the most isolated areas**. This makes for a stable, fast, and secure user experience.”

This means that customers flying will be able to stream TV, films, and series, while watching live news and browsing social media. The service will be accessible from smartphones, digital tablets, and laptops, with each customer able to connect to several devices simultaneously.

Just a few days earlier, on September 24, Hawaiian Airlines shared the same offering with Starlink now available on all Airbus-operated flights between the islands and the continental U.S. or international destinations.

United Airlines also shared the adoption of Starlink earlier in September too, with the network making numerous business deals this year alone.
