Samsung Electronics is currently investing heavily in AI technology. Most recently, it invested in DeePhi, an AI startup based in China that produces AI chipsets which supports instant speech recognition, neural language processing and other recognition tasks on smartphones. It also invested $30 million in Graphcore, a UK-based AI company.
Now, current reports show that the South Korean manufacturing giant will create an artificial intelligence (AI) research center and explore new market areas for all its three major business groups. Recall that last month, there was a minor shake-up in the leadership of the company following the detention of Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee. Samsung said in a statement that the changes in its business structure are mainly to “quickly respond to market changes,”
Although the company did not reveal the location of the research center, it would be a joint research center of the mobile and consumer electronics businesses. The “business development” role of Young Sohn (chief strategy officer) was also strengthened by the company who is serious about exploring new opportunities in components, mobile, and consumer electronics. Recall that sometime last year, Sohn led the $8 billion acquisition of Harman International. Currently, he is in charge Samsung’s Strategy and Innovation Center (SSIC).
