Samsung could bring out rollable phone in 2025

The South Korean giant Samsung could be releasing the first-ever rollable phone to the market as soon as 2025.

According to the initial report by respected Korean tech news publisher The Elec, the technology company is focusing on a new product direction which will look at a ‘roller’ phone that can roll up to a large display.

It’s believed it could be “released in the second half of 2025.” And the Elec describes the potential new phone as being equipped with under-panel camera technology that hides a built-in camera under the display.

This comes after the company was pipped by rival Huawei to the triple-folding phone. Before this, Samsung released its foldable Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Z Flip 6 to consumers which marked a major moment in the world of mobile devices.

Now, the reported re-direction into rollable products could bring a breakthrough for the electronics corporation if they can deliver on a 12.4 inch screen. This is what The Elec is reporting the possible future phone as having.

Rollable phone technology has been attempted before

The prototypes for rollable phones have been showcased before, including in 2020 by Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer Oppo which included a device that could switch between a 6.7-inch and 7.40-inch format.

LG was also working on a rollable device launch, but the company shut down its smartphone division before it could bring its work to light. The device was said to have measured 7.4 inches corner-to-corner when fully extended and could be shrunk down to 6.8 inches when rolled.

Despite the interest in rollable devices by mobile phone creators, there hasn’t yet been one that has come to market – or even got as close to being announced for mainstream purchasing.

The rumors around Samsung’s attempts to become the first to launch rollable phones are just that, as there have been no reports, confirmation, or suggestions from the company that they are heading in that direction.
