The video game platform Roblox is rumored to be bringing in a number of changes following criticism about its child-safety policies.
According to Bloomberg News, they have reviewed an email that states some of the changes that will be taking place including users under the age of 13 being unable to access certain Roblox chat features unless they have parental permission.
This was said to have been written out in an email to parents, along with another change whereby children under nine will need permission to play games with moderate violence or crude humor.
To implement these apparent changes, the California-based company is reported to soon be introducing a new type of account where parents can monitor their child’s activity online.
The publisher says the company plans to bring in the more stringent protections next month, but a Roblox spokesperson declined to comment about the rumored changes with Bloomberg.
Roblox has previously come under scrutiny for child safety
It’s in recent times where the company has integrated rules for its users, with the platform being widely played by children globally. Before, anyone – of any age – could set up an account and talk to strangers.
It was in September when Roblox no longer allowed children under the age of five to set up accounts.
Just a few months before, in July, the company announced it would be labeling games based on the type of content they contain rather than by age.
The platform has almost 72 million daily active users, but its approaches have been widely scrutinized.
In August, Roblox was banned in the country of Turkey as the Minister of Justice took to X (formerly Twitter) to say that access to the game had been blocked by the Adana 6th Criminal Court of Peace.
In an interview earlier this year, Roblox’s chief safety officer Matt Kaufman said safety and civility was “foundational” to the company.
He rejected the idea that Roblox has a systemic problem with child endangerment and said: “Tens of millions of people of all ages have a safe and positive experience on Roblox every single day.”
