The Samsung Gear S3 is an impressive bit of wrist tech and is the current Tizen flagship smartwatch, but it does have some limitations, due to how it works with Non-Samsung Android and iOS devices. Samsung has recently published a compatibility list for these devices that lists all supported features.
One thing that people have found a little irritating when using non-Samsung devices, is the lack of SMS app on the Gear S3 and also not being able to download one from the Tizen Store. Not happy at the situation XDA Developer James St-Pierre has created an Open Source application SMSGear that works with the Gear S3 and possibly the Gear S2, we haven’t been able to test it yet.
Using SMSGear you are able to view SMS messages, send, set conversation limits and set messages limit per conversation straight from the wrist. You can not delete SMS messages or conversations – as this is an Android limitation. At the moment you are not able to make a new conversation and there are lots more features to implement.
In order to Install the app, you need the Android Studio to Install the Android App and also the Tizen Studio to Install the Gear smartwatch app, so ideally this app is designed for more of a developer/tech enthusiast rather than a standard end user.
The developer has remarked that the Gear S3 is the best smartwatch to date that he has used and who can blame him? The S3 is made from tough stainless 316L steel, Integrated GPS, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, IP68 dust and water resistance, Heart Rate Monitor (HRM), Fitness tracker, Gyro, Altimeter, Barometer, ability to make / receive calls, rotating bezel, 1.3″ 360×360 round display, and 3-4 days battery usage. Under the hood of this wearable tech is an Exynos 7270 dual-core processor with 768 MB RAM and 4GB storage for your music and picture files.
Remember, this app is Open Source so you app developers can get involved and make it something very special. You can find all the Information here.
