Mississippi bill focusing on banning online sweepstakes has been rejected

A bill which could ban online sweepstakes in Mississippi has now failed following a rejection from the Senate, after having initially passed in February.

It was just two months ago when the SB 2510 bill secured a 51-0 vote but after being passed it was then amended to include online sports betting language.

The bill was introduced by Joey Fillingane, with the original version proposing how the state could be stricter on the topic of illegal online sweepstakes activity. It was proposed that those offering online sweepstakes would face a hefty fine of up to $100,000 as well as a prison sentence and a forfeiture of assets.

When it was amended, the bill included the creation of a regulated online sports betting market.

Due to this change, the Senate has rejected it after appearing at a conference committee. It might not be over for the bill just yet though as senators will meet with House representatives to see if a compromise can be reached.

What is the Mississippi anti-sweepstakes bill?

The SB 2510 bill focuses on banning online sweepstakes, with the revised version adding in about establishing a regulated online sports betting market.

It’s not the first state to be having these conversations either, as a bill in Maryland, SB 860, has advanced even further. In March, the Senate unanimously approved the bill introduced by Sen. Paul Corderman which would see sweepstakes banned from operating in the state.

This comes after the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency already implemented its own actions in January as it confirmed it had sent 11 cease and desist letters to illegal gambling operators.

In an update, the gaming regulator stated that six had responded. They went on to say that “none have agreed to block Marylanders’ access” and that “follow-up letters to all operators and initial letters to payment processors are in progress, demanding that they block access.”
