Michigan iGaming and sports betting revenue hits record $331.2 Million in January

Michigan’s commercial and tribal gaming operators reported a combined total of $331.2 million in internet gaming (iGaming) and online sports betting gross receipts for January 2025, marking a 25.4% increase compared to December 2024.

This surge set new records for the state’s gaming industry, particularly in iGaming, which brought in $248.2 million, and the highest amount recorded to date, surpassing the previous high of $244 million in December 2024.

Meanwhile, online sports betting gross receipts totaled $83 million, reflecting a significant increase from the $20.2 million reported in December.

The adjusted gross receipts (AGR) for both iGaming and internet sports betting also saw substantial growth, with a combined total of $287.9 million.

The breakdown includes $233.1 million from iGaming, which represented a 6.1% increase from the previous month, and $54.8 million from sports betting, a dramatic rise of $54.5 million compared to December 2024.

Year-over-year, iGaming AGR grew by 42%, while sports betting revenue saw an increase of $36 million.

Despite the impressive revenue gains, total internet sports betting handle experienced a slight decline, coming in at $555.2 million, which represents a 7.1% decrease from the $597.7 million recorded in December 2024.

However, this drop in handle did not impact the overall revenue surge, as operators continued to generate higher margins from sports betting activity.

Gaming operators in Michigan contributed significantly to state and local tax revenues. In January, a total of $46.8 million in taxes and payments were submitted to the State of Michigan, with $43.7 million generated from iGaming and $3.1 million from internet sports betting.

The City of Detroit received $12.8 million in wagering taxes and municipal service fees from its three casinos, with $11.8 million coming from iGaming and $1 million from sports betting. Additionally, tribal operators reported making payments totaling $5 million to governing bodies.

As of January 2025, a total of 15 commercial and tribal operators have been authorized to offer iGaming and/or online sports betting in Michigan.

Currently, 12 operators provide internet sports betting, while all 15 offer iGaming services. More details on operator-specific performance and revenue distribution can be found on the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) website.

Michigan’s iGaming and sports betting industry continues to expand, setting new benchmarks and driving substantial tax revenue. With strong growth in both revenue and operator participation, the market remains a dominant force in the national online gaming landscape.
