Is Elden Ring Nightreign a DLC?

If you thought the Elden Ring experience was over when Shadow of the Erdtree was done and dusted, get ready to become tarnished once again.

Announced at The Game Awards 2024, Elden Ring Nightreign is another experience in the Lands Between, allowing you to head back in and slay some bosses.

But is Nightreign an Elden Ring DLC or is it a full-fledged game? Here, we answer that question to give you a little more insight into what FromSoftware has been cooking up.

Elden Ring Nightreign: Is it a DLC or a separate game?

Back in May 2024, FromSoftware studio head Hidetaka Miyazaki stated that Elden Ring would only have one DLC – Shadow of the Erdtree – so when Nightreign showed up in Geoff Keighley’s show, many were shocked and a little confused.

The trailer showcased some familiar enemies, weapons, and even scenery, so was Miyazaki not telling the truth, or have things changed?

Well, Elden Ring Nightreign is actually a fully separate experience that deters from the standard formula, throwing you into some multiplayer action, in an almost boss rush type mode.

The developers describe the game as “a standalone adventure within the Elden Ring universe” with them “reimagining the game’s core design” by creating co-op action survival elements.

Because this is a ‘standalone’ game, you won’t even need to own the original Elden Ring title and instead, you’ll just be able to buy this and get to hacking enemies down with the squad.

This is perfect for those who (and we’re not sure why you haven’t) played Elden Ring yet and would prefer to get accustomed to the world via this multiplayer avenue instead.

While pricing hasn’t been announced, we expect it to cost much less than what Elden Ring was at launch and it’ll likely sit somewhere around what Shadow of the Erdtree retailed at.

Now we just have to wait for the Elden Ring Nightreign Network Test to get a taste of what is truly in store us!
