Final Fantasy XVI’s long-awaited PC release gets a launch date

tl;dr

  • Final Fantasy XVI's PC release is set for September 17, 2024, after being a PS5 exclusive since June 2023.
  • The base game is priced at $49.99/£44.99, with additional content available via the Expansion Pass and other releases.
  • PC players will need a Nvidia GTX 1070, i5 8400, and 170GB of storage to run the game, with a demo available on Steam.

Final Fantasy XVI’s PC release date was revealed Monday in a surprise social media post by Square Enix.

The saga set in the twin continents of Valisthea has been a PlayStation 5 exclusive since its launch in June 2023, and this iteration alongside other Final Fantasy content has been locked to that console. Today’s announcement via the Square Enix social account at least gives PC fans a calendar date to circle.

When does Final Fantasy XVI launch on PC?

The game will be coming on September 17, 2024 as mentioned on Square Enix’s X account and other social media channels today.

Fans of the series have already responded to the release, with X user @SkyKloudER saying “Play it with a headset, the soundtracks are great, especially during battles ❤️ one of the best games ever.”

The game comes in at $49.99/£44.99. This will be the base version of the game, with additional content coming via the Expansion Pass, or the Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide releases sold separately. There have been no set prices for either of the added content packs; that will be sure to follow in the coming weeks.

The PC specs required to run the game include a Nvidia GTX 1070 and an i5 8400. There is also the not-so-small issue of the 170GB of storage required to play on PC.

In the wait until the release date, players can download a demo via Steam to get themselves in the giant-sword-swinging mood.

More FFXVI content coming?

Console players of FF XVI received their latest patch in May, but the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida told fans that the possibility of more content isn’t a far-flung fantasy.

As part of an interview with (the now defunct) Game Informer, “‘I don’t know at the moment, but at the same time, the possibility isn’t entirely zero.” Yoshida said. “I don’t want to bar out any real possibilities at this time. The reason being is that we did spend a lot of effort […] and time creating this game […] and we put a lot of cutting-edge technology into this game.”
