Courseware for Security Noobs

If you are looking for a basic but solid course on how to teach your entire staff the essentials of good email security and how to avoid common phishing attacks, you might want to look at the education package offered by Wombat Security Technologies. The series can be accessed by any Web browser and has some solid pedagogy behind it.

The operating word here is basic: you aren’t going to get any of the industry security certifications here. If you need to educate your mailroom and loading dock workers and even some aging executives about cyber security, then this is the program for you.

There are five current courses: Email security, password selection, anti-phishing games and how to practice safe social networking. Each course shouldn’t take more than an hour, and many can be completed in far less time. All of them are very practical, grounded in the daily realities of trying to keep your computer safe from prying malware botnets and phony organ-enhancement pill offers. Or the scam spam that I got this morning as I was writing this article:

PhishGuru is a standalone service that can be purchased in conjunction with or separately from the courseware service. It lets you assess and train your employees by sending simulated phishing emails. Wobmat has two games that make use of this service where you (as a fish, get it?) swim around in search of food. When an employee falls for the simulated attack, it creates a unique “teachable moment” when employees are open to learning.

I went through a couple of the courses and they were well done, albeit somewhat simplistic.

Pricing is based on a per-seat basis, and starts at a minimum of $500 annually for smaller sized businesses. Wombat is being used by a variety of larger organizations with several thousand employees too.
