Could Las Vegas airport stats represent an impact on casinos as Canadians avoid US trips?

One of the main airports in Las Vegas serving the city’s multitude of casinos, Harry Reid International Airport, has seen a -7.5% decrease in travelers.

This slowdown in travelers is said to mark the largest monthly decline since the COVID-19 pandemic. In February 2024, the airport reported through a press release that it saw 4,336,169 passengers come through, but this has been reduced to 4,012,454 in February 2025.

While it’s not known whether this is due to recent trade policies changes enacted by Donald Trump, the statistics have been revealed as Trump has embarked on his second term and brought in new economic changes including ongoing tensions with Canada, with The Guardian reporting that passenger bookings on Canada to US routes are currently down by over 70% compared to the same period last year.

Passengers arriving and departing from major Las Vegas airport have decreased year-to-date

The number of arriving and departing passengers year-to-date has decreased too at the major Las Vegas airport, this time by -3.5%. In 2024 YTD, the figure was 8,685,451 compared to 2025 YTD at 8,378,199.

Out of domestic and international guests, domestic passengers have seen a decrease of -7.7%  this February compared to the previous. For international, this stands at a -2.6% decrease.

The international category has seen an overall increase so far when looking at year-to-date travel, with an increase of 7.9%.

When looking at the top five scheduled airlines serving Las Vegas, the airport has highlighted that all five have seen reduced levels of arriving and departing passengers when looking at the monthly figures. Spirit has suffered the highest decrease – from February 2025 to February 2024, at -21.8%, while next up is American Airlines at -12.4%.

The home of casinos typically attracts over 40 million visitors each year, with a massive 79% of those visitors participating in gambling in some form. In 2024, 41.7 million people were reported to have visited the state, which represented a 2.1% increase from 2023’s 40.8 million visitors.

It’s not yet known how instrumental Trump’s economic policies will be in specific states, but all eyes are on Vegas to see how the figures come out over the following months.
