Ex-Conservative officials face court over alleged UK election betting

Senior members of the British Conservative Party, including a former MP who was once a close aide to former prime minister Rishi Sunak, are due in court over claims they placed bets on the timing of the 2024 General Election while knowing inside information.

Craig Williams, the former MP for Montgomeryshire and Sunak’s parliamentary private secretary, is accused of placing a bet in May 2024, right before the election was officially announced.

The MP, who ended up losing his seat in the election, is also facing accusations that he shared confidential details about the government’s election plans with two other individuals. Authorities allege that he tipped them off so they could place bets based on inside information, which would constitute cheating under gambling regulations.

All 15 defendants are set to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London at 10 am on Friday (June 13). They’re facing charges that came out of an investigation by the Gambling Commission.

The list of defendants also includes several people with ties to the Conservative Party. Among them are Nick Mason, who used to be the party’s chief data officer, and Simon Chatfield, a former marketing officer. Jeremy Hunt, a former police officer, is also on the list, along with Iain Makepeace, who previously led the party’s creative, design and print team.

There’s also another Nick Mason, who currently serves as a Tory councillor in Herefordshire, as well as Paul Place, a trustee for a Conservative Party charity. James Ward and Jacob Wilmer, a former government special advisor, are also among those charged.

2024 UK general election betting scandal

UK's Gambling Commission charges 15 over 2024 General Election betting scandal. Polling cards on top of of red, blue, and white Union Jack flag.

Williams is accused of sharing confidential information with Charlotte Lang, who ran as a Conservative candidate in the 2019 election, and Thomas James, a director with the Welsh Conservatives. Lang and James are both being charged alongside Williams.

Sunak made the unexpected announcement on May 22, 2024, that a General Election would be held on July 4. The decision caught many political analysts and commentators off guard, as the general assumption had been that the Conservative Party would delay the election until the autumn or even winter of that year.

In the UK, the Gambling Commission closely monitors betting activity, particularly around sensitive or high-stakes events such as the election. If someone uses confidential government knowledge for personal gain in gambling, it breaches gambling laws and also raises serious concerns about abuse of public office and trust.

In April, ReadWrite reported the charges filed by the commission, which is considered cheating under Section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005, and constitutes a criminal offence.

In this case, the court proceedings will likely focus on tracing those exact connections. They’ll examine communications, betting records, and timelines to determine whether there was a deliberate attempt to profit from insider knowledge.
