If watching the game live on TV was the only thing stopping you from cutting cable, you might start considering looking into Internet TV. Live-streaming games, highlight reels and interactive stats are coming to Internet TV devices meaning you sports fans have one less reason to stick with the old media guard.
This week, Roku announced that it would begin live broadcasting NHL games this winter, while Boxee said that it would be upgrading its NHL app to add even more in the way of interactive stats, news and highlights.
For just over $20 a month, the NHL Game Center Live has jumped onto the iPad, Playstation, Roku and Boxee, giving hockey fans one less excuse to stick with cable TV. For Roku, this is the third major sports league to partner with the company, following both Major League Baseball and Ultimate Fighting Championship. Boxee has had NHL since last April when both began adding sports to their repertoires.
According to Roku’s press release, “NHL GameCenter LIVE subscribers will be able to watch up to 40 live, out-of-market games per week, have access to the NHL Vault for classic games from the 1960s all the way through to last year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, and catch up on all current season games on demand in the 2010 Archive 48 hours after their completion.”
As for Boxee, the new NHL app adds a completely overhauled interface, news and game highlights, an archive of the entire 2007-2008 season, league standings, the ability to hide score and improved video quality. (Did we mention that Boxee just hit the store shelves today?)
