Apple will release the AirTag 2 in mid 2025 – report

TLDR

  • Apple's AirTag 2, codenamed B589, is rumored to launch by mid-2024, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who reports it has progressed in manufacturing tests.
  • The updated tracker is expected to resemble the current model but may feature an extended range, improved privacy measures, and enhanced tamper-proofing.
  • Potential upgrades include a louder speaker, longer battery life, and support for wallets, building on the original AirTag's popularity for tracking personal items and luggage.

The Apple AirTag 2 could be coming as soon as the middle of next year as rumors have begun to circulate.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports the iPhone maker is gearing up for the launch which will take place next year. This comes after the journalist originally reported on the new plans, for the AirTag 2 which has been codenamed B589, back in May.

Now, he says the accessory has “progressed in manufacturing tests, and Apple is getting ready to bring it to market.”

The new version is expected to look similar to the current model, but offer a better range as well as improved privacy. This could make it more difficult for people to remove the speaker from the AirTag, with hopes the next tracker will be more tamper-proof.

Apple getting ready to bring AirTag 2 version to the market

Since the original AirTag was debuted by Apple, it has been used for a range of uses with its main being acting as a key finder so people can find personal objects like keys, bags, apparel, and even vehicles.

Some people even include an AirTag in their checked luggage when traveling, in case their suitcase goes awol.

When the tracker is correctly set up, it can be added to a user’s ‘Find My’ app so the owner can view the item’s current or last known location on a map. If misplaced, and the item is within Bluetooth range, the app can play a sound from the AirTag to help locate it.

The current location tracking service tends to work only over a distance of around 10 meters at best, with the second potentially including a more advanced conductor that could work over greater distances.

In May, Gurman expressed a desire to see further additions including a louder speaker, extended battery life, and battery support for wallets.

The rumors around the second edition have been swirling for some time now. Back in October last year, Apple analyst Ming-Cho Kuo set expectations for a new AirTag to land in 2025, tipping it to be fully compatible with the Apple Vision Pro.
