Apple Acquires Twitter Analytics Platform Topsy For $200 Million

Apple bought Twitter analytics outfit Topsy for $200 million, the Wall Street Journal reports. It now has access to the entire history of tweets, dating back to 2006.

Topsy collects and parses data from Twitter that tells companies what people are talking about online. For instance, Topsy has worked with Hollywood studios to predict the box office success of movies based on the conversation happening on Twitter.

It’s unclear why Apple purchased the  social analytics company, but as the WSJ notes, it could be beneficial for Apple services like iTunes, iAd and Siri.
