Google is transferring the Gemini app team, led by Sissie Hsiao, as part of a restructure under the umbrella of the Google DeepMind group and the leadership of Demis Hassabis.
A blog update on Thursday from Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the changes.
Last year, the U.S. tech powerhouse embarked on a major reorganization of select operations, including the merger of Google Brain and DeepMind into a new unit known as Google DeepMind.
It is the team now responsible for the development of AI at Google, with responsibility for Gemini, the company’s most advanced AI offering. The Gemini app is the primary consumer interface for the models constructed by DeepMind.
Last month, Gemini continued its AI expansion with the rollout of contextual smart email replies, while DeepMind has been integrated into YouTube delivering a range of AI tools to users.
Streamlining Gemini to compete in the generative AI race
By bringing the teams closer together, the company is aiming to deliver better and faster collaboration, which “will improve feedback loops, (and) enable fast deployment of our new models in the Gemini app,” said Pichai.
In addition to the main team changes, Google is also moving its Assistant teams tasked with Devices and Home Experiences to join Platforms & Devices. The plan is for more seamless output, with the Assistant group working directly with colleagues on the products they are developing.
CEO Pichai also announced Google Search VP Prabhakar Raghavan is pivoting back to his “computer science roots” to assume the position of Chief Technologist.
In this key leadership role, he will work closely with Pichai to deliver a technical strategy as part of the push into the AI era. He was previously responsible for Google’s range of Knowledge and Information products including Search, News, Ads, Payments, and more but that remit will now be the responsibility of Nick Fox, a seasoned Google veteran with over 20 years of experience at the company under his belt.
