Today, Samsung announced that millions of its consumers now have access to its Bixby voice assistant as its voice capabilities extend to over 200 countries and territories globally. South Korea, United States, U.K., Australia, Canada, South Africa and much more are now able to use Bixby voice capabilities
Much work was put into the functionality of Bixby which was initially available in Korean language only. Subsequently, Samsung was able to overcome the hurdles and included English (US) language to Bixby and we can only expect that more languages will be added with time. Bixby helps to get things done faster through Quick Commands, a feature that allows you to easily create a custom voice command to use in place of a sequence of one or more commands. For example, you can use the command “good night” as a shortcut for “Turn on Do-not-disturb mode, set an alarm for 6:00 AM and turn on blue light filter.” From today, Bixby will become so easy to activate on the Galaxy S8 and S8+. A button has been dedicated for Bixby on these phones and all you have to do is to push the button to activate Bixby. Alternatively, you can simply say “Hi, Bixby” to turn it on.
Injong Rhee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Software, and Services of the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics said in a comment
“Now millions of customers worldwide have access to a new and intelligent way of interacting with their phone,”…“The expansion of Bixby’s voice capabilities is an initial step in the continued rollout of Bixby functionality. In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices.”
Bixby also has understanding abilities. For example, you can record a short video and ask Bixby to “send video to Samuel”. It understands cross-application commands and will filter the exact video that it is to send to Samuel. This ability makes the interaction with your smartphone seamless and with time, Bixby will be able to recognize your preferred way of speaking e.g. the way you talk when you are tired or the way you sound early in the morning.
Bixby is an intelligent interface and not a standalone app. This means that it can assist other applications that are Bixby enabled. It is deeply integrated with the smartphone and you can change phone options without interfering with what you are doing. The growth and developments of Bixby are continuous and more countries will soon be able to use this feature.
