YouTube continues to grow and on current Alexa figures, the online video
site is now ranked number 4 web site in the world – behind only Yahoo, MSN and Google itself! The chart below
shows YouTube well ahead of MySpace now and (on today’s data) now ahead of China’s
biggest search engine Baidu.
Just 6 or so months ago, YouTube had only just snuck into the top 10 on Alexa. So this
truly is remarkable growth and it shows no signs of stopping, although it has to be said
there’s quite a gap between number 3 (Google) and its recent acquisition at number 4:
I also checked out the comparisons on Compete and
comScore. Note that both of these measure data for
the United States market only. Here is Compete’s graph:
And comScore, where the results were very similar to Compete:
This perhaps shows that YouTube has a very active international audience, because
Alexa measures international traffic and not just US. For good measure, I did a
Google Trends chart too:
YouTube has had rapid growth there too and is now about equal with MySpace.
All up, I think the Alexa stats around YouTube are very revealing – taken with the
usual grain of salt. And because online video is projected to be the biggest Web
trend of 2007, YouTube has a lot more growth left in it yet!
