With Apple Stuck On Land, Google Takes Maps Underwater

While Apple is busy floundering on land, Google has moved on to begin mapping the seas. On Tuesday, Google published its first underwater Street View images, adding panoramic views of key sites under the ocean to Google Maps.

The timing of Google’s announcement is amusing, as this week’s big gadget story is frustration with Apple’s initial attempts at mapping without Google’s help. iPhone users around the world have complained that Apple’s Maps don’t even know where their local businesses, streets or towns are.

Since Apple’s lukewarm launch, the press has begun to wonder whether Google will deliver a standalone mapping app for iOS to compete with Apple’s. Google appears to be buying time by showing off this undersea Reef View as a demonstration of its planet-wide prowess.
