Friday, December 13 in the early morning (at 7pm!) an odd bunch of nervous, happy people will walk into the Epitech in Toulouse. Nervous, because they can win money with their Tizen app or idea and happy because they are just a few months ago before these apps are to be bought by Tizen users!
At about that same time, a similar group of people will go into a yet unknown building in Barcelona. Similar nervousness and similar happy people!
It’s not just a group of nice people, these events are part of a globally active group of coders and companies. The event is organised and sponsored by Intel and I have a feeling there’ll be some Samsung expertise around as well. That’s great because now you discuss your idea or challenge with people who are in the know and, together with friendly coders, develop what might become the next million seller!
The idea of the Tizen Hack Battle is to develop a mobile application Tizen, a new open source Linux-based foundation, supported by Samsung, Intel and telecom operators like NTT docomo and orange among others. There are just a few rules: It has to be an app for Tizen and it has to be finished sunday afternoon.
You have an idea for an application? You are a coder, developer, designer, marketer? This weekend you have to be in Barcelona or Toulouse! And for those of you that already have developed an app for Tizen: This is the place to be to get help or even get promoted. Or win!
At the end of the weekend, in both cities, $1.500,- is to be handed over to the winners. The best application “from scratch” and the best Webapp a will each get $ 750. Via telecommunications the winner of both hacks will be announced, giving her or him a price worth well over 1.000 dollar dollars.

Tizen
Tizen is an open source operating system, designed for use on smartphones, tablets and an increasing number of devices like fridges and cameras but also to be a main OS for in vehicle systems. Samsung and Intel are two of the driving forces behind this initiative. Tizen OS is making good use of HTML5. The main software elements are connected to Linux, the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL) and WebKit.
Javascript developers can use their favourite frameworks for developing onto the Tizen OS. A JavaScript API allows you the much needed access to native functions like GPS and the accelerometer. If you have a WebApp these (and several other challenges in the coming months) might help you to port it over to Tizen and be the winner!
