Tizen smartphone sold 3 million units in 2015

Samsung’s strategy of making its initial Tizen smartphones fall under the budget category seems to be working out quite well, as a recent report from market research agency Strategy Analytics claims that Samsung sold over 3 million Tizen smartphones in 2015! While the numbers may look huge, Samsung’s very own android devices from the J series proved to be a problem for the sales of Tizen based Z3 and Z1 launched in India.

Trailing behind Android, iOS and Windows phone, Tizen held its position as the 4th largest mobile OS with a total of 900 thousand Tizen based smartphones sold between October and December (Q4) 2015. This was the time when Samsung had focused more on the the 4G (which the current line of Tizen smartphones lack) enabled J series smartphones in India and neighboring countries, as a result the company saw a decline in sales of Tizen phones compared to 1 million phones sold in Q3 2015. The remaining number responsible for the 3 million claims came from the Q1 and Q2 2015  combined which saw over a million Tizen smartphones sold by the firm.
The major nations responsible for this market share of Tizen phones came from India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Russia will soon be among this list as Samsung is bringing its Tizen smartphones to the enterprise market in the country.
Linda Sui, Director of the Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) at Strategy Analytics was found stating that Samsung’s brand value and a good supply and distribution chain in India and other developing nations are playing a major role in the growth of Tizen and said that it is still at an early stage to build a complete ecosystem that is commercially viable for consumers, on the other hand Sui said that Wearable electronics like smartwatches can provide short term opportunities for the growth of Tizen.
