Samsung is working on two new foldable smartphones

Samsung launched its first foldable smartphone, called the Galaxy Fold, last month with the tagline “The Future Unfolds”. And it seems the company indeed believes that the foldable form factor is the future of smartphones. The Korean giant is seriously committed into this new style of handset, so much so that it has already started working on the second generation of its foldable smartphones.

Two new foldable smartphones in development

Samsung reportedly has two new foldable smartphones in development.Bloomberg reports that the company is developing a clamshell-like device, which folds vertically. The device will have a small screen on the outside, similar to that of the Galaxy Fold. However, the company may remove it depending on how customers respond to the small outer screen of the Galaxy Fold.

Samsung also has an out-folding device in the works. The device will be similar to Huawei’s Mate X, which was launched last month. Apparently, this device already exists in prototypes as Samsung wanted to make it its first foldable smartphone. This out-folding device will not feature a secondary display, and hence, will be thinner than the Galaxy Fold.

The Galaxy Fold has created quite an excitement in the industry. However, it is yet to go on sale, and until then, one cannot say for sure if foldable smartphones are indeed the future. The device goes on sale on April 26, at a starting price of $1980. That’s huge to say the least, but it is touted to be worth every penny. If it manages to impress the crowds, only time will tell.

Samsung is reportedly working on to improve the Galaxy Fold’s display durability. Apparently, a crease appears on the display panel after the device has been folded around 10,000 times. The company is trying to remove it, and may even offer free screen replacements for this particular issue.

Samsung plans to unveil its second generation foldable smartphones later this year or in early 2020. The vertically folding phone will come out ahead of the out-folding device.
