Samsung’s Gear S2 and Galaxy S6 Edge grabbed awards at Mobile World Congress 2016

MWC has come and gone like every year with some major announcements from multiple brands. Samsung’s Unpacked event for the launch of the Galaxy S7 turned out to be a massive hit where even the Gear S2 got some stage time from Pranav Mistry, Global Vice President of Research at Samsung. The Annual Global Mobile awards from GSMA held during this year’s MWC didn’t turn out to be all good for sammy with its competitors like LG, Huawei and Microsoft ranked out higher in the smartphone and tablet categories. However, Samsung still managed to grab two awards for the Gear S2 and the Galaxy S6 Edge smartphone.

The Gear S2 won under the “Best Connected Consumer Electronic Device” for its intuitive design and the rotating Bezel that we have all admired since the launch of the smartwatch back in 2015. The Tizen based smartwatch has only been getting better in terms of features being offered by Samsung and developers alike. If there is one aspect of the smartwatch we all could agree upon that Samsung needs to look over seriously in its next iteration, battery life would be on top of that list. Meanwhile, the current Gear S2 has been doing pretty good in terms of sales with newer variants of the smartwatch like the Rose Gold and Platinum edition and the recent eSIM enabled 3G variant hitting more markets globally.

The Galaxy S6 Edge on the other hand won under the “Best Smartphone 2015” category. The smartphone was a major refreshment from Samsung’s mainstream design language which consumers were slowly getting tired of seeing in almost every Galaxy Device. The S6 edge’s dual edge bezel-less display brought in some innovative uses for multitasking on the smartphone. The smartphone is also supported by the Gear VR headset which Samsung is expected to give a major boost to in 2016 and Mark Zukerberg’s stage time at the Unpacked event talking about Oculus could be seen as a supporting factor to it.
