Samsung reduces its manpower for first time in 7 years

Samsung Electronics employee statistics in 2016 shows that for the first time in seven years, it downsized its workforce probably due to its restructuring in China. Yonhap news agency reported that employees of the South Korean manufacturing giant were 325,677 as of 2015. However, by 2016, this figure dropped to 308,745, a 5.6% decrease compared to the previous year.
As at the end of 2016, the percentage of employees at Samsung Electronics dropped to 69.8%. Domestic staff reduced by 3.8% to 93,204 while those abroad was cut down by 5.8% to 215,541. In China, its employees dropped by 17.5% to 37,070 in 2016 as against 44,948 staff in 2015. However, the number of staff in North and South America increased by 8.5% to 25,988. It appears that there was no gender discrimination in the general downsizing. In 2016, 44% of Samsung’s staff were female. This value is only 2% less than what it had in 2015.
A company official ascribed Samsung’s downsizing of employees to the corporate restructuring in its factories in China and other Asian countries. The sale of its printing business to HP could also be a factor. As at the end of 2016, Samsung has 2,468 cooperative business partners worldwide, 238 major production facilities, 53 distribution centres, 34 research and development centres, 7 design centres and 73 service centres across the world.
