Samsung Bixby now understands various accents: Announced for India

India appears to be the point of attraction for many manufacturers. Concrete plans are already in place for Samsung to introduce Bixby, its virtual assistant, to India later this month. This report was made public as the firm announced the availability of the Galaxy Note 8 smartphone. Google’s Assistant, Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana, and Amazon’s Alexa are all set to launch in India too sometime this year. This means that there will be a huge competition for AI-powered digital assistants in the country.
India has numerous dialects, accent, and context and for Bixby to be successful it needs to adapt to a majority of these accents. Samsung knows this and that’s why it has invested dogmatic efforts at its Research and Development centers in Bengaluru. Samsung which is one of the top manufacturers of smartphones both in volume and brand value says it has completely built Bixby to be compatible with different Indian accents, thus those who have chosen English (US) language can use Bixby.
Earlier this year, Bixby was launched in the US and several European countries. At the time of its launch, it had four main features which are the ability to understand voice command, for reminders, picture snapping/cataloging and receiving of recommendations. By September 30, Samsung’s Bixby will be available to customers in India. Bixby user-base is still very shallow as it is only compatible with the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and the new Galaxy Note 8. This is perhaps the only shortfall that Bixby has in comparison to other AI assistants like Siri and Google’s Assistant.
The insufficient user-base of Bixby may be a major stumbling block to its development. However, it is expected that Samsung will sooner or later make this AI assistant compatible with more devices as Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa are really developing.
