Pakistan’s capital of Punjab, Lahore, has begun a major crackdown on illegal gambling in the province. Lahore police now claim that they’ve managed to arrest over 1600 people, and have over 400 cases this year.
The police have stated that they’ve recovered 8.41 million rupees from those arrested. Speaking to the local press, Capital City Police Officer Bilal Siddique Kamyana said:
“The noose is tightening around those involved in online gambling.”
He is also pushing for punishments against social media account operators who are promoting gambling, as well as mobile apps. Part of this plan is to collaborate with the prosecution departments to task them with the full extent of the law.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the local law enforcement. According to reports from Tribune.com.pk, the raiding team was beaten with sticks by locals as they arrested the ring leader, Bala Aslam. Hundreds were reported to have shown up to watch a horse race, and one named individual, Tauqeer Bhatti, has had a case opened for fighting with the police.
In total, 1619 people were arrested, 413 cases have been opened, and even the horses were confiscated during the raid.
Pakistan gambling ban is historically ignored
Of course, Pakistan has outlawed gambling. However, it’s not due to the predominant religion being Islam, but over a British law from 1867. Passed in 1977, the Prevent of Gambling Act was modified slightly a year later and replaced several other laws that also prevented gambling.
Fines go up to 1000 rupees, and a year in prison, or both. However, there’s a larger fine of 5000 for those who use a “common gaming house,” which covers playing cards, dice, counters, money, or other typical gambling paraphernalia.
Similar to other countries that have a strict no-gambling policy in place, there are exceptions for tourists. These only allow foreigners to use them.
