OpenAI has launched ‘ChatGPT Pro,’ a $200-a-month subscription which includes access to its smartest model OpenAI o1, as well as o1-mini, GPT-4o and Advanced Voice.
The plan will also see the addition of an o1 pro mode which is a version of o1 that “uses more compute to think harder and provide even better answers to the hardest questions.”
The AI company expects to “add more powerful, compute-intensive productivity features to this plan.”
While the hefty price tag may not be for everyone, OpenAI specifically names the types of people it could benefit – researchers, engineers, and other individuals who use research-grade intelligence daily.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even replied to someone on X asking for a student discount by saying: “almost everyone will be best-served by our free tier or the $20/month plus tier.
“A small percentage of users want to use ChatGPT a TON and hit rate limits and want to pay more for more intelligence on really hard problems. the $200/month tier is good for them!”
He reiterates this in another post, as he says o1 is also available on the plus tier which is a more affordable option.
ChatGPT Pro includes a version that thinks for longer
The most premium subscription model will include access to a version of the technology company’s most advanced model “that thinks longer for the most reliable responses.”
The team says that in evaluations from external expert testers, “o1 pro mode produces more reliably accurate and comprehensive responses, especially in areas like data science, programming, and case law analysis.
“Compared to both o1 and o1-preview, o1 pro mode performs better on challenging ML benchmarks across math, science, and coding.”
Within the announcement, OpenAI shared that they will award 10 grants of ChatGPT Pro to medical researchers at several leading institutions within the US.
The company will then expand the new Pro grants to other regions and areas of research in the future.
