The Nubia Alpha wearable smartphone has got an official release date. Nubia, the company behind this next-gen device, has confirmed that the device will be released on April 8 in China, with pre-orders available immediately. The company, however, isn’t revealing the pricing details yet. Nubia is expected to launch the device in Europe and the US in the coming months.
Multiple variants of the Nubia Alpha will be launched
The Nubia Alpha is a hybrid of a smartphone and a smartwatch. It features a 4-inch flexible OLED display with a resolution of 960 x 192 pixels, a 5 MP 82-degree wide-angle camera and eSIM support (or Bluetooth connection to another device with a SIM). And while these features suggest the device to be a smartphone, the Nubia Alpha can be worn on wrist. Nubia claims that its watch has 230% extra screen real estate than the standard smartwatches. It lets you place calls and answer them, track your heartbeat, take pictures and videos, and do much more.
The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, and runs on Nubia’s custom Android-based OS. It has 1GB RAM and 8GB storage space. The 500 mAh battery is said to deliver up to 48 hours of standby time. For navigation, the watch features two knobs on the right edge. Nubia is also offering gesture controls for smoother navigation.
Nubia will be launching multiple variants of the device throughout the year. The Bluetooth variant of the Nubia Alpha will reportedly cost €449 (about $510), whereas the model with eSIM support will be priced at €549 (about $620). There will also be a gold version (with 18K gold plating) which will cost €649 (about $740). These variants are expected to arrive later in the year.
Nubia had the Alpha on show at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. While the device on display at the event was far from a polished product, the company surely have changed quite a few things by now. Novelty in design is the Nubia Alpha’s main selling point. So, it’d be interesting to see how polished the final product would be.
