Semiconductor company says it’ll start shipping chips for Switch 2 in September

tl;dr

  • Weltrend Semiconductor will supply components for new consoles from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft starting in September.
  • Nintendo is stockpiling its next-gen console, likely the Switch 2, to counter scalpers and meet high demand at launch.
  • PS5 Pro specs are confirmed, but no release date yet; Microsoft remains quiet on its new disc-less Xbox Series X.

A semiconductor company says it will begin supplying Nintendo and Sony with components for new consoles this September, apparently referring to the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro and the Nintendo Switch 2, or whatever the successor console will be called.

Tony Lin, chief executive of Taiwanese chipmaker Weltrend Semiconductor, was telling his investors he expected the company’s video game component business to recover in the coming quarter once it started supplying motherboards not only to Nintendo and Sony, but also to Microsoft’s Xbox division. Lin said the chip orders were for new console models, not existing ones.

Nintendo is already preparing for a huge Switch 2 launch

Nintendo has allegedly begun the process of stockpiling its new console to avoid scalpers dominating the secondary market once it launches. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was vocal about limiting the control that scalpers have on market price and availability.

“As a measure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number of units to meet customer demand,” Furukawa told investors in July, “and this approach has not changed since last year.”

News of the new Switch has been teased several times over the past year by analysts and industry pundits. Furukawa himself said (via Nintendo’s official X account) that news would be coming “within this fiscal year.”

As for the PS5 Pro, we reported that the presumed specs for the console can be confirmed as real. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson confirmed back in March that the leaked PS5 Pro specs were legitimate, but still no release date has been confirmed.

The new disc-less Xbox Series X has been on the cards for some time now, but Microsoft has been equally shy about releasing information. So the rival companies might be waiting on the first to break the silence on exact dates, but the specs of the Switch, the new Xbox, and the PS5 Pro have been leaking throughout the year.
